Definition of an avatar:

a manifestation of a deity or released soul in bodily form on earth; an incarnate divine teacher. an incarnation, embodiment, or manifestation of a person or idea. an icon or figure representing a particular person in video games, Internet forums, etc.

So in otherwords, you could say we're deities in 3 dimensional form. And you wouldn't insult a deity by calling them a cartoon, now would you? BOOM. There it is.
